Antoine Coypel, born April 11, 1661 in Paris, where he died January 7, 1722, was a French painter. His first paintings, lost but some of which are known through engravings, bear witness to a quite exceptional virtuosity for a painter who was not yet twenty years old. A member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture at the age of 20, he was then successful and received numerous commissions for the royal residences of Marly, Versailles and Meudon. He became the official painter of the house of Orléans in 1685. Appointed director of the Academy in 1714 then rector, he was appointed First Painter to the King in 1716. His major work is the decoration of the ceiling of the chapel of the Palace of Versailles. (1716), executed in a Baroque style reminiscent of the Roman examples that the painter admired in his youth.
