Some of the texts and notices of the works come from Wikipedia, where they are made freely available under a Creative Commons license.
Almost all of the images on the site come from institutions around the world that have adopted a policy of open access to public domain images in their collections, making them available to be used freely for any purpose, including commercial.
It is therefore allowed to users of the site to download, share and reuse these images without any restriction.
Some images are from Wikimedia Commons, in which case we also reflect their position on public domain images which states that "photographs that carefully reproduce public domain works in two dimensions are also in the public domain".
This is based on several court decisions around the world, including
The American Bridgeman v. Corel case.
- The European Union (EU) Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market was adopted and entered into force on June 7, 2019.
- Article 14 of the directive states that reproductions of works of visual art which are in the public domain cannot be subject to copyright or related rights, unless the reproduction is an original creative work.
We have endeavored to minimize the unlikely risks of misqualifying content as public domain as much as possible by:
- Limiting the sources we have used for our public domain content to sources we believe to be trustworthy,
- Limiting ourselves to content that has been presented as public domain for long enough that we judged that any issues with public domain status would have already been flagged.
